crash and burn and need to rebuild but |
|
|
My SBS 2000 went down and is on a domain with several other servers/domain
controllers. Is there any way to rebuild/reinstall my SBS 2000 server?
I know documentation states: Small Business Server as the root domain
controller of a Microsoft Active Directory forest.
But there must be a way to reinstall SBS 2000 when the domain is already
established. |

Here are my 2 concerns taken from
http://www.sbsmigration.com/_downloads/Swing_It_Reviewers_Technical_Guide.pdf:
"• SBS by default installs to create a new domain from scratch, but the
product allows for being done as an in-place upgrade of an existing domain
that complies to the product restrictions.
• Though it’s widely discussed that an SBS cannot be added to an existing
domain, that’s not entirely the whole picture. SBS doesn’t preclude upgrading
an existing Windows Domain to an SBS domain, as just mentioned. Therefore, we
simulate this by building your own new DC in an existing domain, and then
nudging it into the baseline condition that will meet all the requirements
for an “in-place upgrade of an existing DC”."
Here is what I am dealing with:
The domain was once a SBS2000 domain, now a Win2K domain (same domain name).
The server pc that had SBS2000 and wish to return it to SBS 2000 is
currently a 2000 Server on the domain.
Wonder what the nudging steps are? |

OK, you are in better shape than I initially thought. You can in-place
upgrade your Windows 2000 Server box to SBS 2000. The only negative is that
SBS 2000 documentation is a lot harder to come by than it was when SBS 2000
was a shipping product. You can start here
http://www.microsoft.com/sbserver/ and here
http://www.microsoft.com/sbserver/techinfo/productdoc/default.asp.

Thanks for your help. Do you think I will be fine reinstalling even with
the other domain controllers on the network or should I try to install off
the network or create a new domain with sbs 2000 and try to join sbs 2000 to
the existing?

I just tried a test server and I fail on setup of SBS 2000 with the following
error:
"Small Business Server Must Be Installed as the Root of the Forest
You can install Small Business Server only on a server that is either the
root of an Active Directory forest or a member of a workgroup.
Demote the computer, remove it from the domain, and then restart setup.
To demote the computer"
Any ideas on how to continue installing sbs 2000 with the domain already
established? |

the target system must hold all FSMO roles and be a GC. Does your target
satisfy these criteria?
