Something strange is going on with SBS2003. I can't log in at all! If I log
in in front of the computer as Administrator, the computer will give me the
"Applying your personal settings" window for about ten minutes, and then a
blue screen with the white pointer appears--nothing else. No start button,
no nothing. Ctrl-alt-delete doesn't work.

If I log in remotely using RDC, it just gives me the grey screen (I never
get the "applying you personal settings" window.

Everything else appears to be functioning normally, I can get emails from
exchange, shared folders are working, etc.

Any ideas on how I fix this?

I migrated to a new piece of hardware three weeks ago without a hitch, and I
added shared fax services two weeks ago, again without a hitch.

Hi David

How about RWW as administrator

From another pc open event viewer to check server logs

Safe Mode ?

If no luck accessing event viewer I use ERD Commander to access a faulty
server.

Did you put the administrator account in the PowerUsers group, or any group

that is a member of the PowerUsers group. A poweruser cannot log into the SBS
console.

How long did you wait ?

If the CapsLock light works when you toggle the keyboard key it's not
locked up, so I'd leave it for even a considerable time - It may be a
corrupt profile that needs rebuilding.

I let it go for about five hours. I finally forced down the computer by
holding down the power button. I removed the sound card (the most recent
addition, added a week or so ago) and powered back up, and now it appears
well. There are a few oddities in the error logs, but I'll post those under
separate cover.

Thanks!

Five hours is a lot more patient than I'd be.

but out of curiosity.... Why a sound card on the server ?
( ...hope your not using it as a workstation as well. )
