I have been reading many of the posts and have learned a great deal. But I
have a question. Here's my scenerio:

I have a domain that currently has 3 servers: PDC, BDC, & member. The PDC &
BDC are NT and the member is a 2000. There are only 20 users in the domain.
We are going to a new software system and need to upgrade to 2003. Bought two
new servers. Is it better to create a new domain and add the 20 users I have
to it and then demote and bring in the other servers to the new domain? Or
should I upgrade the exisiting PDC to 2003 and bring in the new servers into
the existing domain? I need to keep the current BDC on NT for certain
programs.

Thanks!

In almost all cases, it is better to upgrade.

There are some very specific exceptions but these
are not in general the case despite that fact that you
may hear many recommendations to create a new
domain for those who don't really understand these
systems -- they were DESIGNED to be upgraded.

Hardware issues (e.g., a PDC that cannot be upgrade)
can be overcome fairly easily.

You can keep you existing BDCs (especially with such
a small domain -- the advantages of removing the BDCs
and upgrading the domain to more advanced modes are
largely useful to the large and giant domains and forests.)

If you do decide to remove the "BDC" function while
keeping that machine you will need to upgrade that
machine to Win2000+ since NT-BDCs are permanently
DCs (until upgraded to non-NT.)
