I am in the process of planning an 2000 AD to 2003 AD migration and was
wondering if anyone could give me some advice on the best way to perform this
upgrade.

I have 2 domain controllers DC1 and DC2. DC1 holds the FSMO roles, DHCP
server, and Enterprise Root CA for my domain. DC2 is a global catalog
server. I'd really like to do a clean install on each server and not do a in
place upgrade. My concer with DC1 is how to I migrate the Enterprise Root CA
information. I also want to keep the same server names and IP address.
Here is what I am thinking of doing.

System state backups of DC1 and DC2
Run ADPREP processes
Demote DC2
Load Server 2003 (clean install) on DC2
DCPROMO DC2 to Server 2003 DC
Demote DC1
Load Server 2003 (clean install) on DC1
DCPROMO DC1 restore or migrate DHCP and Certificate information back onto DC1
Run through testing procedures

Does this seem like the right way to do this or is there a better way?

Does anyone know how to migrate or move the DHCP and Certificate information
from one server to another?

We are running Exchange 2000 now and I have read KBA 314649. Should I
upgrade the domain and then upgrade to Exchange 2003 or should I upgrade to
Exchange 2003 and upgrade the domain?

Could someone also point me in the right direction of recomended hard disk
configurations for domain controllers? My DCs are Compaq DL380's so I have a
total of 6 hard disks to work with.

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

Hi,

Thanks for the posting.

The right steps:

1. System state backups of DC1 and DC2
2. Promote DC1 to GC
3. Run ADPREP processes, including forestprep and domainprep
4. Update DC1 to Windows 2003
5. Backup CA and DHCP

For backup CA, please refer to the KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;313272

For backup DHCP, please refer to the KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;130642

6. Demote DC2
7. Load Server 2003 (clean install) on DC2
8. DCPROMO DC2 to Server 2003 DC
9. Move all the FSMO roles from DC1 to DC2. Check and make sure
everything is OK.
10. Demote DC1
11. Load Server 2003 (clean install) on DC1
12. DCPROMO DC1 restore or migrate DHCP and Certificate information back
onto DC1
13. Run through testing procedures

I suggest you performing the above steps in test environment before
implementing in the production environment.

For Exchange, if the Exchange is still running on Windows 2000 server, we
do not need to upgrade. However, if you want to run Exchange on Windows
2003 server, we need to upgrade to Exchange 2003.

Sincerely,

thanks for the reply. The link for the CA backup does not work I did find
the following KBA 297138. Is this the same process?

thanks again this process makes more sense.
