Hi!
I've been looking around about why the Windows Messenger supports UDP for
LCS.
On the WM connection config page, it has TCP, TLS and UDP.
I have used TCP and TLS with no problem.
LCS doesn't have any info on how to enable UDP connection.
I just want to find out why WM has this option in the first place.

Chris:

Good to see your name again. =^)

Windows Messenger supports UDP for a few reasons that I have been able to
determine. Granted, one of the folks in the Messenger group may have more
information or may be able to validate this.

The SIP standard does have a place for the UDP protocol. Some SIP-based
servers out there support UDP for Instant Messages...I am on a plane right
now. UDP is used within Windows Messenger for some peer-to-peer
communications, such as video and audio, so it was probably not overly
difficult for the whiz-bang programmers to add an interface to allow Windows
Messenger to send/receive messages using. There are several SIP-enabled
phones that support UDP as well as TCP. There are also several VOIP
gateways that support SIP, but most of them are UDP.

That somewhat covers why WM supports UDP.

Why can't LCS be configured for UDP.
I remember reading something about Live Communications Server not supporting
UDP for Instant Messages due to packet reassembly and lack of packet
acknowledgement for message arrival. I think it was one of Daniel or
Bulent's messages, or a message on Joe's Connected Innovations website, but
can't be certain.

What I am wondering is if they will allow UDP for VOIP or if they are going
to use TCP for the VOIP traffic. The VOIP features are still in development
and testing, as I understand it...or, at least as the trade mags report it.

No problem. I was on a plane when I responded to your message, so I was not
able to Google SIP and UDP. Here is a link of SIP servers that support UDP.
