Shadow Copies "could not start" |
|
|
I went to restore a file using shadow copies and found that there was only one instance of a shadow copy in the list - from the day I enabled it. In trying to troubleshoot why, I have found that the scheduled task reports that it "could not start". I have checked the event log for more information, but there is nothing. This task is set for the default times: 7am and 12pm daily.
When I try to get the properties of the task in Scheduled Tasks, it reports:
---
General fage initialization failed.
The specific error is:
0x8007000d: The data is invalid.
An error has occurred while trying to retrieve task account information. You may continue editing the task object, but will be unable to change the task account information.
---
Any suggestiong on where to start looking? Does anyone know what credentials this task uses to create shadow copies? Am I climbing up the wrong tree? |

SOLVED (but not explained?) |
|
|
Well, after I looked a little more, I found a thread on experts-exchange talking about the specific error I got in Scheduled Tasks. That referred to a M$KB artice which required demoting and promoting the server:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822904
Huge chore (read: not an option / last option).
The original thread in E-E suggests duplicating the scheduled task with a domain account. I was halfway on my way to do this when... everything started working again. ????
The only thing I can imagine is that stopping the service for some time cleared whatever blockage was in the way? I disabled all volume shadow copies on the server for about 15 minutes while I created another account to run the new tasks. I had to re-enable shadow copy to get the precise command for the task. When I did this, everything started to work again.
I hate it when these unexplained things happen. I am just glad that it happened in my favor this time.
You gotta love this job. |

| Thanks for finding the link - the KB article solved my problem, but I really don't think it is that much of a chore to implement it (it only took about 2 minutes). |
