we are establishing merge replication between our SQL database and remote laptops. We can establish a VPN connection from the laptops to our network however SQL agent cannot see the EM and the EM cannot see the laptops. What do i have to open to allow the data to pass?

This is a rule or access issue. You need to give your VPN connections access to the network and SQL, if you are using something like ISA 2004 Server this is very easy to configure using a rule.

For the record, MS SQL Server uses TCP port 1433, but can apparently also communicate for some pre-session handshaking on UDP port 1434. Though I have managed to connect to a sql server using client tools when only TCP/1433 is open.

It could be that an input or output filter on the VPN server itself, or some other firewall device is blocking this communication.
