I don't really know where to report bugs, so I thry this discussion forum
(networking).
I'm using windows server 2003 enterprise SP1 english (free through MSDN:
Academy Alliance) and tried to run Unreal Tournament 2004 (latest patch
3355), the problem is more general than only limited to UT2004 (read
further). The game is so clewer to say that it isn't in the windows firewall
exception list, before trying to use the network.
Ok, then I went to the windows firewall configuration. Selected the
UT2004.exe but got a error message when pressing OK :
"Windows Firewall cannot add 'Play UT2004' to the list of exceptions."
I located the configuration for windows firewall in the registry and
manually added it, then reboot.
Ok, then it's in the list but the game still complains about not being in
the exception list.

At this point I suspect that not only UT2004.exe is affected. I'm testing
arround with other random .exe files and trying to add them.
None of the can be added IF they are on a mounted partition (I have testet
on all 3 mounted partition I have). NTFS mounted partition that is.

Can someone verify this and maybe Microsoft can make a hotfix?

In addition to the mounted folder, I assigned a drive letter to the partition.
That way the windows firewall willingly added UT2004.exe to the exception
list.

Must be a bug i windows firewall.

Hi,

Windows Firewall does not filter outgoing traffic (at all).

Application configuration that you are playing with is for inbound traffic
and not for outbound...

If you are having problems with inbound traffic, you might want to try with
statically opening ports that your game needs.

Thanks for your reply

I already know that it filters ony on incoming traffic, I haven't tested to
manually add the ports on because the game worked after I (in my previous
reply) added a drive letter to the partition. I actually don't know which
ports, but some ingoing ports I pretty sure I wants because of that it won't
run network play without being in the exception list (atleast that it
claims). That was an in-game error message
( http://user.it.uu.se/~chfo3461/trash/UT2004firewallerror.jpg )

I have tested a little more. If a partition is mounted in a folder on
another partition AND has it's own drive letter the path going through the
mounted folder to an program can be added to the exception list in windows
firewall.
BUT if the partition don't have any driveletter, it's only mounted in a
folder, programs can't be added to the exception list.

I just want the windows programmers to have a look on this problem and
correct it. I couldn't find a bug report form at the website so I posted it
here.
My guess is that it affects windows XP SP2 also because it to has windows
firewall, but I havn't tested that.

Wow must be nice to afford Windows 2003 Enterprise Server and the machine which it actually requires it. Wink

Personally if I was going to spend that much money I would have invested in a real firewire like ISA 2004 Server instead of using that mickey mouse freebie one Microsoft gives everyone. Wink
