Hi folks. A question here:

Here's the situation: an old W2K Server was upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition - everything transferred fine and has been working for several months. A new dell poweredge server was purchased and setup with Small Business Server 2003, with the intention being that the new server would manage the AD and domain controller responsibilities and the older machine (running w2k3 server ent) would act as a file server. To that end the tech performed a partial migration (AD settings were transfered) but evidently forgot or didn't know that SBS shuts down if on a network with another server acting as domain controller. I guess he never demoted the old server from domain controller duties (perhaps with the intention of it serving as a backup in case SBS crashed?) and now SBS shuts down within 60 minutes of being turned on, giving the message that the server is the DC. So- I guess my question is this: if I turn off the old server and turn on the new one will this solve the issues? Is it possible to transfer DC settings from W2K3 Enterprise Ed to SBS 2003?

I also need to transfer all the files to the new server, hopefully preserving all the permissions. If I just stick the old HD in and transfer it in windows will the permissions be lost?

I'm new to the server world so I'm just trying to figure things out.

Thanks
