Problem after aborting Win2000 Server Setup |
|
|
I attempted to upgrade from Win98 to Win2000 Server. Part way into the Setup
procedure I realised it was going to force a clean install, so I aborted the
Setup.
Now, every time I start the computer I get an option to boot into Win2000 or
Win98. The default is Win2000, but there are no Win2000 files installed. If
I miss the 5 second window to cursor down to Win98, the system locks up with
a message about not finding files and I have to restart.
I have tried in vain to get rid of this option on startup. I have looked for
files or folders to delete. I have searched the CMOS settings. What am I
missing? Do I have to reinstall Win98 (is this even possible now?).

first, you can press escape to stop the counter
second, you can select win98 from the startup menu
third, to remove the 2000 item from the menu, when windows boots, open
c:\boot.ini file and delete the line that says "windows 2000 server" and
leave everything else the way it is

You can boot with your Win98 startup disk and issue the command
sys C:
this will rewrite the boot sector, then you can delete these files boot.ini,
ntldr, ntdetect.com, bootsect.dos, pagefile.sys and possibly ntbootdd.sys
from the root of the System partition C:\.
