Can I email enable WSS without having Exchange Server.
You see, I don't have an Exchange Server; but I do run a POP mail
server.
I need a way to save email attachments to a library, or even create a
library that can be the reciepient or target address for email. Every
article I find involves having Exchange and a public folder. |

You don't need Exchange. But as far as I know you do need an *IMAP* server.

Welp, I have an SMTP server that can also provide IMAP folders. I went
into Sharepoint Central Administration for the site and was able to
turn the feature on by providing the name of a directory (on the server
- WSS and SMTP are running on same box) under my mail account. When I
get into the sharepoint site's folder, a new Advanced Option is
displayed; HOWEVER, I don't understand the option labeled EVENT
HANDLER:
Specify the assembly name, class name and properties for the document
library's event handler. Windows SharePoint Services will call this
event handler when items in the document library are inserted, updated,
or deleted.
Anyway, I saved a few files into the SMTP mail directory but they
didn't get pulled into the sharepoint list library. All the help I
have found talks from the standpoint of Exchange, so I'm lost. |

For email enabling a WSS document library you do not need the option of
Event Handler, this option is for developers who write custom event handlers
on the document library whenever a document is uploaded, edited...
I do not think you can enable this without an Exchange Server, from the
Admin guide: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services includes the ability to
link a document library with a public folder based on Microsoft Exchange
2000 or later"
Basically, you just need to provide the Public Folder Address and ignore the
Event Handler section.
