WSUS |
|
|
Is the WSUS better then the SUS i had lots of problems running it on a SBS
2003 network. It jacked up my whole network. So i took it off. Does anyone
know if WSUS is a free copy? I'm really looking for a solution because im
getting tired of update my 25 clients individually each time an update comes
out. |

WSUS is a free download. You have to register with Microsoft to download it.
Go to this link for documentation and register for the download:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/downloads/wsus.mspx
IMO WSUS is a far superior solution to SUS. I have used both, and WSUS is
much better. It is not without its quirks (which is why I am searching on
this board), and may take some time to setup correctly, but it applies
patches for a variety of Microsoft products, and gives you a method of
checking which machines were patched, which SUS did not do.
As far as it "jacking up your netwoork", that depends on how your network is
setup. Do you have slow links between sites, etc. WSUS uses the latest
version of BITS, which does a decent job of managing bandwidth for the
downloads.
Hope this helps.

Lots of people are running WSUS successfully on SBS. See this document:

Services on Windows Small Business Server 2003

WSUS works great just make sure you configure what updates to download
before you do the update
(You will get $#$ you don't probably need.)
Follow the SBS Instructions that was posted by someone else and it works.

WSUS Rocks! Way better than SUS, just read the deploy doc, & plan for update
storage requirements
Also get the extras, particularly the notification services and get
automatic weekly reports of your supported sites emailed to you. Great for
showing value add.
