Windows 2003 DC - Production Replica for Lab |
|
|
How do I create a DC (Replica of existing Production Environment) for the Lab
testing.
I can create the DC let it replicate and then take it off line? The isuue is
Lab is isolated, FSMOs are on the Production.
I can also create a fresh DC, load DNS, DHCP, FSMO and then copy restore the
objects from the backup?
I can also create a fresh DC, load DNS, DHCP, FSMO and then copy OUs,
groups, Users manually? This is too time consuming when I am dealing with
large number of objects.
Is there an easy documented procedure? |

Mark,
Thanks you for replying.
My major concern is that I need all FSMOs (which are in production are on
different DCs) in the Lab for my testing. Once the system state is restored,
how will one have all the FSMOs on the Lab DC.
Thanks

Configuration for FSMOs is replicated to all DCs. So you can still seize a
role without the current master being available. When your lab machine is up
and running, use "netdom query fsmo" to see which servers are the owners of
which roles. Then use ntdsutil to sieze the roles that your lab machine isn't
the master for.

Also might be worth cleaning up the metadata afterwards to remove any
records of the old DCs.
