My up to date notifications are anything but up to date. The sms triggered
synchronization occurs between 2 minutes and 2 hours after the email arrives
on the sbs server.

Some observations:

1. When I have my computer connected to the server using a vpn, the SMS
triggered synchronization occurs very soon after receipt of the email. Is
there any reason for this? Could it be because I entered the smtp text
message address on activesync, which is located on my laptop? Is there a
better place to input my text message smtp address? Perhaps I should input it
on the server somewhere, but where?

2. I have disable the direct push feature because none of my devices run
Mobile 5.0.

Hi Paulie,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: After you configure the
Server ActiveSync feature on your Exchange 2003 Server for your SmartPhone
users, you find the Always-Up-To-Date (AUTD) notifications are sent between
2 minutes and 2 hours after the email arrives. If I have misunderstood your
concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Please try to change the value of the batching timer that is used by the
Always-up-to-date Notification based on the following KB article to see if
it helps:

873291 How to change the batching timer to control the Always-up-to-date
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=873291

Actually, when you enable AUTD notifications for your mobile users, if
there is any update on your users'' mailboxes, your Exchange Server will
send a SMTP message to the mobile carrier you configured in your Exchange
Server, and your mobile carrier router will issue a SMS control message and
send it to your mobile device which will trigger a background
synchronization with your Exchange mailbox via Server ActiveSync feature.

So if the problem still occurs, the only thing we need ensure from Exchange
server-side is whether the SMTP messages are generated and sent
successfully to your mobile carrier router. To verify these aspects, please
refer to the following online article:

822176 Troubleshoot Exchange 2003 Always-Up-To-Date Notification
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822176

If the SMTP messages for AUTD notifications are generated and left your
Exchange 2003 Server successfully, we can draw a conclusion that your
Exchange ActiveSync feature works fine.

For more information, you also can refer to the Exchange 2003 deployment
guide and the following articles:

Mobile Access Using Exchange Server 2003 White Paper
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/outlook/MobileAccess.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/outlook/OMA.asp

I hope the above information helps. Should you have any concerns, please
feel free to let me know.

Best regards,

Crina Li (MSFT)

Hi Crina,

I read document 822176 as you instructed me to in your post. I followed the
instructions and everything is occuring normally except for what is detailed
in this portion of the document:

Quote:
Verify That the Message Was Processed by the Outlook Mobile Access
Categorizer
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Event Viewer.
2. Click to select the Application log.
3. On the View menu, click Filter.
4. Click the Filter tab, and then type 10310 in the Event ID field.
This event indicates that the message was processed by the Outlook Mobile >Access Categorizer. Event 10310 provides the user’s device address, the
user’s alias, and the MessageID.

My server does not generate message 10310. Instead I get message 10308.
Is that a problem?

Also, I went to the message tracker in the Exchange system manager and it
looks as though the recipient for these sms messages is my normal email
address and not the smtp address that I specified in Active Sync. Does this
suggest that the SMS triggers are going to the wrong place?

Any thoughts?
