Web Farm Question |
|
|
Hello,
We have multiple SQL servers and want to balance the content database load
across them. What is the potential issues with the configuration database
hosted on one server and the content database hosted on another? Specially
in relation to some kind of disaster recovery scenario.
Thanks!!!!!! |

No issue, that I can discern. A content database is an atomic
collection of content from a virtual server. The configuration database
tells SharePoint the name of the content database for a given IIS
virtual server (among other things).
There is no "sync" between a site and a content database. A content
database /is/ the site.
Sorry if my explanation is unclear, I guess it's hard to verbalize the
explanation sometimes. :)

The content & configuration data bases are being backed up regularly and we
even use stsadm.exe to backup the websites periodically.
I realize that some WSS components are more important then others.
In a server farm/remote SQL configuration, if we're doing the above
mentioned backups, is there a potential issue with performing a recovery
procedure. Steps to accomplish before others or knowing that the websites
and content databases are unsynchronized.
Your answer is appreciated, but if I receive another like this....I guess I
would have to rely on "hands on" testing.
Thanks for your time.

Well, I've always believed that a loss of the configuration database is
not the end of the world (though it will make life a bit difficult to
restore in a web farm environment). It's the content database that's 100%
important in terms of disaster recovery.
I don't really see how your proposed setup would make disaster recovery
any easier or more complex, honestly. If there's a failure, there's a
failure.
