When doing a ping -a <ip address of non-windows host> I get a response but no
host name, also the same result when using nslookup with the IP. All works
fine for Windows hosts.

Windows hosts are in a single domain Windows 2003 forest and use DDNS for
the zone ad.xyzcorp.com. Infoblox unix based DNS servers host the zone
xyzcorp.com and is configured such that ad.xyzcorp.com is delegated to the
Windows DNS servers and the Windows DNS servers forward to the Infoblox
servers. Forward name resolution works fine and reverse lookups work fine
from a Windows host to any other Windows hosts but not to the hosts in the
xyzcorp.com zone. If the Windows client is configured to point directly to
the xyzcorp.com DNS servers then the reverse lookup also works but does not
when pointing to the Windows DNS servers. How should the DNS servers be
configured so that reverse lookup works when a Windows host tries a reverese
lookup against a host that resides in the parent xyzcorp.com zone?

To ensure any DNS server to resolve ANY queries in your infrastructure, you
must have a copy of that zone or some other way to get to it. In your case,
it seems a secondary of the reverse zone on the other server may be prudent.
Does that make sense?
