Shared Fax - Setup Error 11708 |

Hi Everybody,
I've been trying to install the shared fax services for quite sometime now
and I'm running into the same problem all the time, in the event viewer, Msi
Installer event ID 11708, couldn't complete the setup of Shared Fax Services.
I've been trying to install it from:
CD Rom directly
Copied Install on HD
Through the Add/Remove Programs by clicking on change Small Business Server
2000
Tried different target directory, check all the permissions on the target
directories, tried different ones, tried install under Admin, under a
different administrator user account. Updated the Msi Installer. Nothing
works.

Not sure if this is the same I was running into, but it looks like the
update to MSI 3.1 was what caused the problem for me. I uninstalled
that and MS Fax installed like a charm...

I've got the same problem. how would I go about uninstalling the latest MSI
update as I cannot find it in add/remove programs with the rest of the
windows updates

I have the same problem but uninstalling Windows Installer 3.1 did not help.
Still can not install MS Shared Fax – Still "Unspecified error"....

fixed it... & hopefully this post can save other people some frustration.
It seems that the Windows Installer has stuffed things up.
When you look thought the attempted MS Fax install logs, Windows Installer
is looking in the wrong places...
Basic steps:
- Uninstall/remove all & any versions of Windows installer.
- Reinstall the Windows Installed that is located on the SBS CD's – it MUST
be the version that is located in the SBS CD's Fax directory (CD 2
| Quote: | Fax\Server).
- Install the MS Fax through the Add/Remove of the SBS components as normal |
& it works with out an error.
More Detailed Steps:
- Uninstall any Windows Installers located in the Add/Remove Programs (eg 3
or 3.1)
- Reboot
- Rename the Windows Installer dll's
At the command prompt, type the following, depending on your version of
Windows, and then press Enter after each line.
cd \winnt\system32
ren msi.dll msi.old
ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
exit
- Reboot (new dlls will return but be an early version)
- Install the Windows Installer that is located in the SBS CD2 Fax directory
CD 2 >Fax\Server)INSTMSIW.EXE
- Reboot
- Install the MS Fax component through the SBS Change/Add/Remove & it should
install without an error at the end!
