Domain Add Succeeds -- But Doesn't |
|
|
I am currently rolling out LCS 2005 SP1 on a network with three
domains -- 1 parent, 2 children (user-only).
I've run domain prep on the parent followed by the children. When I'm
logged into the LCS server as the administrator for the parent domain
and run Domain Add on the children the MMC reports the Domain Adds
were successful. However, when I select one of the child domains the
"Domain Add to Forest Root" shows "Not Ready". What am I missing to
get Domain Add to work?

Chris -
It may take up to a few hours for the information to replicate, dependent
upon how you you have your Active Directory replication cycles configured.
It should have replicated by now. Can you check it again?

Bob

Just checked the LCS server. Both child domains still show "Domain
Add to Forest Root" as "Not ready".

Yes, that's correct. When I run setup I see checks beside Prep
Schema, Prep Forest, Prep Domain, Install Files for Standard Edition
Server and Activate Standard Edition Server. The option for Domain
Add to Forest Root is greyed out and does not have a check mark beside
it.
Following your advice (after hunting for the missing parameter <g>) I
was able to run the following from the command prompt while logged in
as the administrator of the child domain (for users-only child
domain):
lcscmd.exe /domain:child.parent.org /refdomain:parent.org
/action:DomainAdd /usersonly
The html log shows "Success" and now it's just a waiting game for
Active Directory replication. I'll post an update after I get home
tonight. Thanks for the help thus far!

You can see the checkbox for Prep Schema, Prep Forest, and Prep Domain, but
Domain Add to Forest Root is grayed out?
Can you try, from the command prompt,
LcsCmd.exe /domain:yourdomain.forest.local /action:DomainAdd
(I think this is the proper command) |

Thanks, Chris. Sometimes I forget all those little command line switches,
and my lab is presently being upgraded/installed. It happens every 120
days, or at least should happen every 120. Sometimes it is longer than 120.

Can you install the support tools and perform a "dcdiag /s:dcname" from one
of the child domain systems? See if one of the FSMO roles are missing.
Thanks,
Bob
