more than four DNS-subdomains |
|
|
Hi there!
i stumbled over a crazy thing. I get errors when I put more than four
subdomains in one "nomal" tld domain like "local" and "one" "two" "three"
"four" "five" as subs.
OK I read about it in an MCSE book also, but I cannot remember such
behaviour in a BIND 8 or 9 zone.
Can you please give me an answer or is it so, that Microsoft reads the RFCs
and the others do not?

W3K-E SP1; latestupdates
Immediatly after I have created the 5th domain or subdomain, the MMC closes
the domains or subs. The MMC/console crashes after that. After a restart i
have only a red cross on that zone ;). The MMC kills/delets my reverse zone
too.

I've never heard of this happening, are there any events logged?

Never ? The reason for this test for us was MS Press Craig Zackers 70-293,
chapter 4. There one states that. :) After the test we had that described dns
fallout on the test server. This error was reproduced 3 times. Before that
the server has worked fine. After that :
- the DNS events logs that the test zone file is lost ; critical AD errors
- the directory service reports massive NTDS KCC errors ; couldnt complete
structure
- the dnsmgmt crahes like every further mmc snap in
- after a reload/restart is the revers zone deleted
etc. |

If you are having this problem, it may be with Active Directory, not DNS.
You stated your question was about DNS sub domains, but according to this it
is an Active Directory problem.
Does the problem occur if you change the zone to standard primary?

Re: more than four DNS-subdomains |

Hi Kevin!
O.K. from the beginning. We have a testing system with four AD domains in a
forest parted into two trees. The other three domains are functioning very
well. The fourth was fine until we created a new forward looking AD
integrated zone named "kalle.de" which has nothing to do with the AD we
created.
We did this only for testing purpose because the book MCSE 70-293 of Craig
Zacker stated so, that one is not allowed to create more than 4 subdomains.
For me, an old UNIX guy and Kristians tutor this was very funny and I was
willing to try this. Then the things happend mentioned above:
The DNS MMC started to act as funny as it can be. We think this is an MMC
problem with the DNS stack and there are no evidence of a problem in the
system or dns events. Even if we put the debug level in the registry to 5.
What do you think?
Best regards, Thilo and Kristian |

No idea, I have dozens of zones, with many subdomains, way more than four,
all AD integrated, with no problem.
Maybe there is something else going on, but from what you are describing I
cannot reproduce your problem.
