Replace 2000 DC's but keep same name and IP |
|
|
We would like to replace two Windows Server 2000 DC's with two new
Server 2003 DC's. We would like to keep the same names and IP addresses
for both servers.
Other factors:
2003 Exchange server exist in the domain.
Other domains exist in the forest that is not going to be upgraded to
2003 at this time.
All domain controllers run DHCP, DNS, and Wins.
Looking for"Best Practices" documentation on this.
Greatly appreciate your help.

Hi,
My suggestion is:
1. Add the 2 Windows 2003 into the domain, promote to DC with new computer
names.
2. Demote the 2 windows 2000 DC and move out of domain.
3. Rename Windows 2003 DCs
Please refer to following article to rename Windows 2003 DCs.
814589 HOW TO: Rename a Windows 2003 Domain Controller

Hope it helps.

Sounds simple but what about the Global Catalog? Do I have to move it
from one of the old DC's to the new DC before I demote and remove the
old DC's? |

Hi ,
Maybe I'm not very clear.
Sure, you need to transfer FSMO before you demote the Windows 2000 DC.
