Hi

One of my customers has a lot of problem with his cluster. He has installed
2 nodes active-active cluster with Microsoft Exchange 2003, file, print,
DHCP as cluster resources. He also has installed both cluster nodes as DC
and DNS servers. It was very instable platform with many problems for him.

I recommend him to remove DC and DNS role from his cluster and separate
DC/DNS roles from cluster. After we have removed this roles from cluster, I
can't get MSDTC to work correct again.

Then I start up the cluster, everything was ok. But if I try to move the
MSDTC group to another node, it failed and cluster servers on the new node
stop.

I see this error in my application log to:

--------------

Error 4389 - Source: MSDTC Client

--------------

MS DTC setup failed to populate the shared cluster registry. The DTC
resource will not be able to come online.Error Specifics:
d:\nt\com\complus\dtc\shared\mtxclu\mtxclusetuphelper.cpp:120, CmdLine:
"C:\WINDOWS\cluster\resrcmon.exe" -e 888 -m 892 -p 3556, Pid: 3864

---------------------

I try to remove and install MSDTC again, but get same errors.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Ola,

The time we've seen MSDTC wouldn't come online, was because it wasn't either
fully/properly installed. But we really haven't been able to pinpoint down
how exactly it got in that state to begin with.

Here's what customers have done to resolve this problem:

1. Stop cluster service.
2. Under Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components, remove Application
Server.
3. Under Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components, add Application Server.
4. Follow steps in article ID: 817064 to enable network access for DTC.
5. Reboot.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 for other cluster node.
7. After reboot, DTC service will be set for automatic startup so change it
back to manual on both nodes.
8. Start cluster service on both nodes.
9. In Cluster Administrator, delete the MSDTC resource.
10. Recreate the MSDTC resource using article ID: 301600.

In step 1 it was said "stop cluster service". In step 8 was said "star
cluster service on both nodes". My question is how can I start it, i
all the cluster resources will be offline as quorum too. If these node
will not see quorum disk, how the cluster will start?
