multinode printcluster |
|
|
Hello,
I'm planning on building a 3 node W2K3 print cluster with at least 4
virtual nodes for different types of printerdrivers. This way we hope to
isolate different brands of printer drivers from one another. 2 Virtual
nodes will run HP Laser-printers. 1 Virtual node will run Canon
Printers/copiers/faxes/scanners and the last virtual node will run all
kinds of printers that are "needed but not really wanted" /
unsupported.
The 2 HP VNodes will both have 1 physical node for them selves and the
last to 2 VNodes will run together on 1 physical node, this because these
nodes will have a lot less printers connected.
A few questions that I have here are:
Is this configuration indeed possible, don't I end up with a N+1
configuration where only 2 printer nodes will start and the other 2 will
not start because I need 5 physical nodes for 4 virtual printer nodes?
Am I right in the idea that this configuration isolates the HP Drivers
from the Canon drivers and from the unsupported drivers?
The whole configuration will be build using a FC San that is currently
also used by a 2 node filecluster (W2K) and a single fileserver (W2K). In
the future I'm thinking about migratig this single server to W2K3
and adding this server to the cluster so the cluster will in the
future be a 4 node cluster with 1 Virtual Fileserver and 4 Virtual
printservers. After that I could migrate the other 2 node cluster and
include it into the same cluster to end up with a 6 node cluster.
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks in advance,

With Windows Server 2003 clustering, all printer drivers are automatically
copied to each node in the cluster. So in your configuration all nodes will
have all drivers.
Print clusters don't have any hard-coded rules. You can have the 4 virtual
servers within a 1 node cluster for example (unless you really want HA :)).
Exchange and SQL cluster have rules, file and print clusters don't. So yes,
your can do what you want with the number of nodes you will have.
Your configuration does not isolate the drivers though. This is a change
from Windows 2000, where you had to load the drivers on each node
separately.
Cheers,
Rod

I know this but I thought that on the physical nodes the drivers ended up
in different directories in the spool directory, where every virtual node
has it's own uid as driver directory.

The drivers are indeed installed on the virtual node in the shared drive
and then copied to <systemroot>\system32\spool\<VNODE-UID> by of the
physical node that the virtual node is running on. I thought that because
the driver is not installed in <systemroot>\system32\spool\drivers but in
the <VNODE-UID> directory that it was isolated within this virtual node.
Besides that I hoped that 2003 clustering would ensure that corrupt
drivers in VNODE-1 don't interfere with drivers in VNODE-2 on the same
physiscal node.
Any comments?

This is indeed what I mean. I didn't have the exact directory structure at
hand because I don't have a running printcluster here. But can you tell
me, are the drivers of the different kind of printers in the setup that I
proposed in my first mail, or like above in this situation with 4 spooler
resources on a 2 node cluster, indeed isolated from one another, not only
physically on the disk but also in memory?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

There is only one spooler process running on the node. The drivers will
load from differnet locations, but they will load within the same spooler
process.
