adprep utility |

my question is in two fold:
1. MS article 324392 discussed enhancements to Adprep.exe in W2K3 SP1 and
in hotfix 324392. Since SP1 is a beta release, are there any issues in using
it to run adprep in a live environment or should I stick with the adprep in
the W2K3 CD. As far as the hotfix, it tells you to contact MS to obtain the
fix.
2. I have a root domain, root.com and a child domain, child.root.com. Do I
need to run the adprep on the child as well or will running the adprep on the
root FSMO take care of the whole forest. There is only one server in the
child domain and it has its acts as the child domain FSMO and GC. It is
also running SMS 2003. |

Hello,
Good to hear from you.
As for KB 324392 and the hotfix to enhance Adprep.exe, we recommend that
you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this
hotfix since W2K3 SP1 is a Beta release of a Microsoft product, and no
formal product support is available from Microsoft.
Regarding your scenario, you only need to run "ADPREP /FORESTPREP" once on
the schema master in your root domain (root.com), and run ADPrep
/domainprep on the Infrastructure Master in each AD domain, both root
domain (root.com) and the child domain (child.root.com).
Generally speaking, "ADPREP /FORESTPREP" is a one-time operation performed
on the schema operation master (FSMO) of the forest. The FORESTPREP
operation must have successfully completed and replicated to the
infrastructure master of each domain before "ADPREP /DOMAINPREP" can be
executed in that domain. To run "ADPREP /FORESTPREP", the user must be a
member of the Schema Admins, Domain Admins, and Enterprise Admins groups.
"ADPREP /DOMAINPREP" is a one-time operation run on the infrastructure
operation master domain controller of each domain in the forest being
upgraded. To run "ADPREP /DOMAINPREP", the user must be a member of the
Domain Admins group of the domain in which you are running DOMAINPREP.
More information is offered in the articles below.
Please pay extra attention in the part "Overview: Upgrading Windows 2000
domain controllers to Windows Server 2003", which contains the information
about "adprep"

Since "adprep" should run in DC containing certain roles, you may find the
following article helpful to view FSMO roles of a DC.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get
in touch!
