Hi all,

We have an SBS2K server which all appears to be working beautifully.
However, over the last few weeks 1 particular web site (ebay.co.uk!) more
often than not takes ages to download, quite often with page errors, or
just
wont download at all. I cant find any other site that has this problem.

This is being experienced on all the PCs on the network and in addition
they
are all kept clean with various anti spy/malware programs.
The server has 2 adapters. One for LAN & the other for ADSL via a router.
It
is fully patched as of about 3 weeks ago.

I would generally just assume that the site, or the route to it, is
experiencing some problems however, if a standalone PC is plugged directly
into the router at the same time as the server then this PC has no problem
accessing the site at the exact same time that a network PC is struggling
to
get the pages.

I have rebooted the server & deleted the contents of c:/urlcache. Beyond
that, being no expert, I am stumped. Can anyone suggest what might be
causing this?

Thanks
Stewart

The following KB article explains methods for clearing out ISA web web
cache. I use the VBS script they provide rather than deleting anything
manually from the urlcache:

Hi Kevin,

I have tried all 3 methods mentioned in this article but still having the
same problem. What seems strange is that one minute it is working great
and
the next it grinds to a halt. When I run the other PC, connected directly
to
the router - independent of the server, at the exact same time looking for
the exact same pages, it has no problem.

Any more ideas?

Thanks
Stewart.

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for your posting. Also thanks for our MVP Kevin's kindly reply.

This is a really weird issue, but you may refer to the following steps for
further troubleshooting:

1. If you accesses the specific web site by using the IP address, does
this issue occur? Because this issue may be related to DNS service, you
may try to restart the DNS Service to clear the DNS cache to see how it
goes.

2. It seems that this issue is not persistent, because "What seems strange
is that one minute it is working great and the next it grinds to a halt".
Then, immediately after the issue occurs, if you restart the server, could
this issue be temp resolved? If so, you may restart the individual service
instead of the server to identify further. So far the possible cause under
my estimate is ISA cache and DNS services.

3. Since ISA2k is installed, I would suggest you may disable the Web Proxy
in IE, and get firewall client installed on the client. (Disable the HTTP
Redirector or configure it as "Send to requested Web server") Then access
the problematic web site again, if it work, we can confirm that the web
proxy service doesn't work well with this particular site, you may try the
following workaround.

a. Configure ISA 2000 to use the automatic configuration script.
b. Add the ebay.co.uk into the direct access list.
c. Restart the Web Proxy and Firewall service.

For more detailed information, please see:
_Access.html>

4. Furthermore, if the issue persists after above steps, you may need to
make sure when this issue occur, if affect not only the clients, but the
server. I mean that you may try to visit the Web site from the server when
the issue occurs. This point could make things clearer.

Hope this helps

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
Tom Che

ank you for your input - sorry for not replying earlier.

I have tried using the IP address instead of the fqdn and this does not seem
to solve the problem.

I have the firewall client installed & running on the PCs but IE is set to
'use a proxy server'. If I turn this off so that the requests are redirected
through the firewall client then this seems to resolve the problem. However,
if I come back next day and try it then it has slowed down again. If I set
IE back to 'use proxy server' then it
still seems to work ok again for a few hours or so.
Even if I turn 'use proxy server' off then immediately back on it seems to
start working OK for a while.

I have tried restarting all relevant services, even rebooting the server but
this has no effect.

I have also tried the procedure in 'Configuring Web Proxy Clients for Direct
Access' but nothing works at all after doing this. Perhaps I have
misunderstood something.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks
Stewart.

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for your update. Sorry for my delayed response due to the weekend.

This issue is really weird, but you may try the following method to disable
the cache of this problematic site.

This method uses Routing Rules to control caching of specific sites or
URLs. To
prevent caching of a specific site and path, perform the following steps:

1. Create a Destination set that, partially or fully, defines the Site and
path whose caching you wish to regulate. For example:
Destination: ebay.co.uk
Path: /somePath*

NOTE: Do not specify "HTTP://" when you create the destination set and the
path data is optional.

2. Create a routing rule that applies to this destination set:

- For processing requests, select "Retrieve them directly from the
specified destination".

- Set "Search cache for" to "Any version of the object, if non exists,
retrieve the request using the route defined on the action tab".

- Set "Cache content" to "No content will ever be cached".

3. After the wizard completes, set the order of the new rule to be above
any other rules that may apply to a similar Destination Set, including the
default rule that may applies to "Any Request".

If this does not work, please select "VALID version of the object, if non
exists, retrieve the request using the route defined on the action tab"
instead of ANY during STEP 2.

If the issue persists after above steps, please disable all HTTP caching
for a test.

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day!

Tom Che

Have a nice day!

ank you for your input - sorry for not replying earlier.

I have tried using the IP address instead of the fqdn and this does not
seem
to solve the problem.

I have the firewall client installed & running on the PCs but IE is set to
'use a proxy server'. If I turn this off so that the requests are
redirected
through the firewall client then this seems to resolve the problem.
However,
if I come back next day and try it then it has slowed down again. If I set
IE back to 'use proxy server' then it
still seems to work ok again for a few hours or so.
Even if I turn 'use proxy server' off then immediately back on it seems to
start working OK for a while.

I have tried restarting all relevant services, even rebooting the server
but
this has no effect.

I have also tried the procedure in 'Configuring Web Proxy Clients for
Direct
Access' but nothing works at all after doing this. Perhaps I have
misunderstood something.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks
Stewart.

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for your posting. Also thanks for our MVP Kevin's kindly reply.

This is a really weird issue, but you may refer to the following steps
for
further troubleshooting:

1. If you accesses the specific web site by using the IP address, does
this issue occur? Because this issue may be related to DNS service, you
may try to restart the DNS Service to clear the DNS cache to see how it
goes.

2. It seems that this issue is not persistent, because "What seems
strange
is that one minute it is working great and the next it grinds to a
halt".
Then, immediately after the issue occurs, if you restart the server,
could
this issue be temp resolved? If so, you may restart the individual
service
instead of the server to identify further. So far the possible cause
under
my estimate is ISA cache and DNS services.

3. Since ISA2k is installed, I would suggest you may disable the Web
Proxy
in IE, and get firewall client installed on the client. (Disable the
HTTP
Redirector or configure it as "Send to requested Web server") Then
access
the problematic web site again, if it work, we can confirm that the web
proxy service doesn't work well with this particular site, you may try
the
following workaround.

a. Configure ISA 2000 to use the automatic configuration script.
b. Add the ebay.co.uk into the direct access list.
c. Restart the Web Proxy and Firewall service.

For more detailed information, please see:

http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/Configuring_Web_Proxy_Clients_for_Direct
_Access.html

4. Furthermore, if the issue persists after above steps, you may need to
make sure when this issue occur, if affect not only the clients, but the
server. I mean that you may try to visit the Web site from the server
when
the issue occurs. This point could make things clearer.

Hope this helps

Have a nice day!

Hi Kevin,

I have tried all 3 methods mentioned in this article but still having
the
same problem. What seems strange is that one minute it is working great
and
the next it grinds to a halt. When I run the other PC, connected
directly
to
the router - independent of the server, at the exact same time looking
for
the exact same pages, it has no problem.

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Hi all,

We have an SBS2K server which all appears to be working beautifully.
However, over the last few weeks 1 particular web site (ebay.co.uk!)
more
often than not takes ages to download, quite often with page errors,
or
just
wont download at all. I cant find any other site that has this
problem.

This is being experienced on all the PCs on the network and in
addition
they
are all kept clean with various anti spy/malware programs.
The server has 2 adapters. One for LAN & the other for ADSL via a
router.
It
is fully patched as of about 3 weeks ago.

I would generally just assume that the site, or the route to it, is
experiencing some problems however, if a standalone PC is plugged
directly
into the router at the same time as the server then this PC has no
problem
accessing the site at the exact same time that a network PC is
struggling
to
get the pages.

I have rebooted the server & deleted the contents of c:/urlcache.
Beyond
that, being no expert, I am stumped. Can anyone suggest what might be
causing this?

Thanks
Stewart

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for your update.

I think we need to do more tests to find out the root cause:

1. What error message displayed when the access issue occurred. Please let
me know the error message verbatim.

2. Please check the ISA logs. What log entries were logged when the problem
occurred? If possible, please send the ISA logs to me at:
v-tomche@microsoft.com

3. Does this problem also occur when accessing the site from the SBS server
locally?

4. Does this problem occur on the home page of ebay.co.uk? If not, which
URL did the users experience the issue on?

5. If you uninstall ISA client from one workstation, and then set Web proxy
server for it. Does the issue occur?

Have a nice day!

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for your update. Sorry for my delayed response due to the
weekend.

This issue is really weird, but you may try the following method to
disable
the cache of this problematic site.

This method uses Routing Rules to control caching of specific sites or
URLs. To
prevent caching of a specific site and path, perform the following steps:

1. Create a Destination set that, partially or fully, defines the Site
and
path whose caching you wish to regulate. For example:
Destination: ebay.co.uk
Path: /somePath*

NOTE: Do not specify "HTTP://" when you create the destination set and
the
path data is optional.

3. After the wizard completes, set the order of the new rule to be above
any other rules that may apply to a similar Destination Set, including
the
default rule that may applies to "Any Request".

If this does not work, please select "VALID version of the object, if non
exists, retrieve the request using the route defined on the action tab"
instead of ANY during STEP 2.

If the issue persists after above steps, please disable all HTTP caching
for a test.

Hope this helps.
