Jack up the server name and data and role new H/W under it |
|
|
I am doing a migration of a NT4 member file server in a nt4 domain to a 2003
server in the same domain. I want to jack up the server name and data and
role new hardware under it so the change is transparent to our users (no
fixing or recreating drive mappings, shortcuts or embedded links in excel
etc). We have ~400 local groups that need to be recreated....maybe...., let
me explain. Our resource domain is being brought into our corporate AD domain
in a month or so but I cant wait that long to move my server.
I have 2 questions.
1. what is the best way to move all my data/grps/shares/permissions from one
server to another, down the old server and let the new 2003 take its place
with the same name etc.
2. Given that we will be in AD soon, should I try to move all my local grps
to domain grps.
2a if yes, should I do this before or after moving to the new server
2b is there an easy way to do this? |

Upgrade IN PLACE to Win2003 -- then do an ASR onto the new
hardware.
If it works, nothing changes.

Domain groups ARE either Local or Global groups, so it depends on why you
created each group.
Global Groups are for "sets of users".
Local Groups on the domain are (typically) for sets of Resources.
You cannot fully utilize Local domain groups (on member servers
and domain workstations) until you switch to native+ mode on the
domain.

Probably not. And it may not matter.

No. Not really. (export lists and import might automate it a bit.)

Hi Herb, thanks for the reply. I dont have enough disk space on this server
to do an upgrade in place butI think I found a tool that is just what I was
looking for. Its called MSVR-Migrator by Winzero
http://www.winzero.ca/MSVR-Migrator.htm , have you ever heard of it? I do
have a nt 4 print server that I was thinking about doing an in place upgrade
on however, could you elaborate on 'do an ASR onto the new hardware"
thanks

There are still ways to do an upgrade in place.

Win2003 supports ASR (automated system recovery) which
among other things is designed to recover a Win2003 Server
that is lost completely. Therefore it is directly applicable to
"moving" to new hardware.
But to use it you must first be running Win2003 (not even Win2000)
but there is a similar but more manual method in Win2000 using
system state backup/restore followed by a "repair install."
ASR automates most of those individual steps for the restore.

Hello,
Thanks for posting!
I agree with Herb. If the Old NT Hardware support Windows 2003 server, you
may perform an in-place upgrade. I would like to provide you with more
information for your reference:
