Can DFS synchronize on both windows 2003 AD and NT.4 SAM |
|
|
Hi, im a new to my position and my company is in a mixed mode nt/ 2000/2003
server environment. I was wondering can DFS synchronize on both windows
2000/2003 AD and NT.4 sam? |

Not quite sure I follow the question. Let me see if this will help:
DFS can be setup in stand-alone mode or the root information can be stored
in Active Directory. The root(s) should be setup on a Windows 2000 or 2003
server, as the NT version is older and not as good.
Once you have setup a DFS root, you can create links that point to file
shares on NT 4, 2000, 2003 or SAMBA (I think). The base OS doesn't matter -
the links are simply client referrals to shares.
Stand-alone roots are just that; domain based roots are fault tolerant.

thx paul
Actually, I am trying to proof that DFS can synchronize on a windows 2003 AD
and NT.4 SAM.

So you have a root, and a shared folder on a BDC and another shared folder
on a DC and you want to configure FRS replication between the two? That
will work providing the DFS root is created on a DC (and root replicas
configured - not strictly necessary, but needed for proper fault tolerance).
The shared folder on NT and 2k3 will be replicated by FRS. The underlying
operating system that hosts the share is irrelevant. What is relevant is
the version of DFS and they type.

Actually, FRS requires W2K or W2K3. FRS wasn't available on NT4 to my
knowledge.

Oh, that's interesting. So you can use 'normal' links that refer to NT
shared folders but you can't replicate NT shares? Makes sense, as like you
said there was no NtFrs back then.

Correct. For link targets, DFS doesn't care what the underlying share's OS
is; as long as it's a UNC path, DFS will refer you to it. On the other hand,
FRS must be running on those link targets to keep them replicated, and FRS
only runs on W2K and above.
