I see that in Win2k3 SP1 that we are now able to rename DFS links. Does this
feature require every server on the AD to be Win2k3 SP1? Or.. if we have
only one server that Win2k3 SP1 and use it to rename DFS links, will those AD
changes replicate to our other Win2k servers (also hosting DFS links)
properly?

Also.. is the DFS GUI going to be updated accordingly to support a 'right
click'/Rename option or will everything have to continue to be done from the
command line?

I don't know the answer to your question. I would be interested in hearing
you results from within a test lab though <g>

As for the GUI, I believe it is being revamped for R2.

Well.. I ran some test with an environment containing a Windows 2003 DC and
Windows 2003 SP1 DC.

There seems to be some incompatibility between the two.

1st) I created a DFS link on the plain 2003 DC and tried to rename it from
the SP1 box. It didn't work, I got an error that stated 'Error 50, the
request isn't supported'

2nd) I created a new DFS link on the SP1 box and tried to rename it, that
worked.

3rd) I tried to add my SP1 machine to act as an additional 'root target' for
the DFS link created in step 1. Again, I got an error stated that the
request wasn't supported.

4th) I tried to add my plain 2003 DC (no service packs) to act as an
additional 'root target' for the DFS link created in step 2. Again, I got an
error stating that the request was not supported.

Looks like MS doesn't want people mixing SP1's with pre-SP1s when it comes
to hosting the DFS roots. mixing at the link level wasn't a problem. I'm
guessing that only roots hosted by SP1 machines are able to be renamed in any
fashion (roots or links).

Yet another reason not to update to SP1 unless you are ready to do it
firmwide. Typical M$.

I'm curious now what would happen for people that have 2000 and 2003 boxes
sharing the DFS roots and then you update one of the 2003's to SP1.
