I am re-posting my question here as it appears to be the authority on all
SBS2003 topics.

I have not been able to acess the Internet from the SBS2003 server for over
two weeks now - users are having severe withdrawal symptoms.
Traced the problem (I think) to missing entries under the 'Domain.Local'
heading in DNS. I observe on a functioning server that there should be a
"_msdcs, _sites, _tcp, _udp, DomainDnsZones, and ForestDnsZones" tree under
the Domain.Local entry. All of this is missing, probably deleted during some
intense troubleshooting by two outside helpers brought in in desparation.
Is there a way of restoring these entries other than doing a reinstall from
scratch?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is. Unfortunately the few times I have called Microsoft for
dns/domain name problems they clicked faster thgan my brain could
observe/absorb. You can see a bunch of articles if you google
reinstall dns server. I would not do what many recommend because it
starts with no dns. I think the tech guys ripped out what was there
and ran through the dns wizard mentioned in this article.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814591

Please note that this is not recommended. This just looks familiar. I
would call Microsoft tech support to clear up the problem. The fee
they charge is less than the aggrevation if you mess up. Only $245 US.

How is the server connected to the internet? Can you post an ipconfig
/all from the server?

The server is connected to the Internet via a dial-up modem - broadband is
not available at this remote site.
The IPconfig is not much help:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : gph1
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : GooreePark.local
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : GooreePark.local

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Ethernet NIC
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0D-61-55-D2-66
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Hello again Jim,
I was all keyed up to reinstall DNS as described in the article but Murphy
struck again. My SBS 2003 does not have the "Configure Your Server Wizard"
mentioned and I could not find it on the CD.
Any ideas?
Janos
