Incorrect WINS ip address |
|
|
I have just installed a new sbs2003 server and have a WINS issue, I have
installed 5 others with no issues. On this one I can connect to network
shares if I put the server host name and IP in the local workstation
hosts file. Further investigation shows that the server LAN card IP
proerties shows the IP as 192.168.11.100 and the DHCP and WINS servers
as the same, however if I do an ipconfig /all on the server it shows the
WINS server ip as 192.168.2.100. I have searched the registry for that
IP to no avail.
Where is the NIC getting the incorrect WINS ip address from? I'll try a
re-boot later but any other ideas appreciated.
Thanks

Oh my, you shouldn't need to do that. HOSTS files are not what you want (and
don't handle NetBIOS anyway - that's what LMHOSTS is for). DNS is really the
issue here - is your Active Directory DNS set up properly?
All servers and workstations should specify *only* the internal
SBS/AD-integrated DNS server's IP address in their network settings. The SBS
DNS server itself should be set up with forwarders to your ISP's DNS servers
for external resolution and/or use root hints.
Also, what version of Windows on the workstation? Use WinXP Pro or
Win2k...and join the computers to the domain once DNS is set up right.

So you have more than one NIC, right? Are you using ISA?
Can you post the *unedited* contents of an ipconfig /all?

Adding the hosts entry was a temporary workaround and appears to work,
it was not intended to be the solution

DNS is set up as you suggest and works OK

Workstations are a horrible mix of Win98, ME and XP pro internally but
all Win XP Pro for remote access.

This is the ipconfig on the remote client just for info.

look in Routing and Remote Access go to IP Routing go to Nat/Basic Firewall
right click properties and then Address Assignment. Make sure this feature
is turned OFF!
