We have 12 users on an SBS server network.

one of the PCs suddenly cannot detect the network. I have checked the
wiring and sockets - they are fine. when i switch on the machine, the lights
at the back of the PC which indicate the network cable do light up. but on
start-up, cannot access any network files or folders, and PC cannot detect
the network.

Any suggestions?

start run cmd. ipconfig/all.

If it does not return an ip similar to other workstations the
workstation might have messed up tcp. Could be infected with viruses
or some other stuff that kills the tcp/ip
