After applying update KB840987 the server keeps rebooting over and over
again. Windows 2003 Standard Server is loaded and all goes well until the
Exchange 2003 IMAP4 service is started. The server jumps right to the BIOS
POST (no normal shutdown).

The server is a PIII/1000MHz with 1024MB RAM, ITE RAID1 with 2x160GB IDE.
Running Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition, Exchange Server 2003, NAI
Total VirusDefense 7.01, GFI MailEssentials 9.0. All products are patched
with the latest updates.

When booted with the Last Know Good the servers acts normal.

Are there any known problems with this update?

Can you post the most recent info from c:\windows\KB840987.log?
Any event log errors?
Were you able to boot to safe mode?

Did you try reinstalling the hotfix and see if you are getting the same
issue?
But before doing so, make sure you have a good server backup including
system state data.
I've seen where the antivirus software can prevent the hotfix from
installing properly.
You might try installing the hotfix in safe mode.

Terrence,

Thanks for your reply. I solved the problem...

First I applied patch 883935, 841356, 841533, 824151 and 887797. Thereafter
patch 840987 was no longer needed (didn't show up in the Critical Updates
section). So perhaps there was a problem and it was solved in other patches
as well.

For your information, booting to safe made was also not possible. Only the
last known good configuration worked (the server wasn't logged off correctly
so the lkg had the configuration without the patch).
