filtering on a lookup field has restricted comparison option |
|
|
Hello,
I'm trying to filter a list using "Begins With" for the Comparison
selection. But the problem is that when the field I'm filtering on is a
lookup field to another table, "Begins With" is not one of the options.
Is there anyway to work around this?
Thanks,

All my experience with filters has been that you take the options MS gives
you and if the one you want to use isn't there, it's a pity but ...
Or, in other words, it would nice to think there was a fix, but somehow I
doubt it.

Found it! From FrontPage, List View Properties > Filter, you select a
field that's just plain text, select "Begins With" for the comparison
field, and then go back to the Field Name drop down and select the
lookup field you want to use "Begins With" on. Works like a charm. A
hacky charm, but functional. |

Explain this again?
1. Select a field that's plain text and use the Begins With filter.
so far so good. that's clear.
2A. go back to the Field Name drop down and select the
lookup field you want to use "Begins With" on.
Do you mean that having selected using the filter for a different field you
then *list* your Lookup field ?
[Thinking that it won't work unless you have a text field presumably
duplicating the contents of the Lookup field]
Or is it
2B. You pick a field (any field); get the Begins With option; and then *in
the same filter selection* change the field name and the Begins With option
is still there ?
(Boy, that's a really odd fix ...)
I suppose the next question is 'does it work - i.e does it select the ones
you want ?'
If 2B then this is very suitable for a FAQ item - it'll save people a lot of
trouble - so please reply.

Yes, 2B. So, to be clear... Frontpage. List View Properties. Filter.
I go and select, in Field Name, a field that I know to be plain text.
Then I select "Begins With" for the comparison. Next I go *back* to the
Field Name and change it to my lookup field. "Begins With" remains as
the comparison choice. I continue with specifying the filter options.
And, amazingly, it works.
And yes, do put it in the FAQ! Your FAQ has helped me figure out
