Documents stored on two locations |
|
|
Hi,
Is it possible to have a document on a local harddrive or networkshare AND
in a sharepoint library.
I'm looking for some kind of shadow folder functionality where the
local/network files are always the same as the latest version in a
sharepoint documentlibrary. In the best scenario, opening the local/network
file to also open/update the file in Sharepoint (only from within sharepoint
enabled applications ofcourse, like word/excel).
Is this possible?

local harddrive
Net use X: \\servername\xxx\doclib
where http://servername/xxx/doclib/AllItems.aspx is the web address.
Then X: contains all the same files as are actually stored in the WSS
database for that doc lib.
You should I suspect amend them only using the WSS UI though.

Hi Mike,
Sorry to tell you that the solution you presented doesn't work with my
server.
I created a test site called "test", added a document library called "files"
and tried to map a drive to \\sv1016\test\files. The error presented by
windows is;
H:\>net use y: \\sv1016\test\files
System error 67 has occurred.
The network name cannot be found.
Am I missing a component?

Erik

I think it needs Office 2003 on the client.
Do you have that installed ?

Hi Mike,
Yes, we have Office 2003 installed on the client. Are you sure sharepoint
implements drive-mappings to document libraries? I know it supports
"WebFolders" but I didn't see sharepoint implement CIFS.

Re: Documents stored on two locations |

I've done it several times.
Occasionally it (the correct statement) doesn't work but a on a re-try it
usually does. (I have no idea why this is)
I've also found that it's easier if the entire path has no spaces (or
presumably other non-standard characters).
[Usually the above para refers to the doc lib; but it could refer to the xxx
in my example too]
But the main message is that I'm not imagining this. It does work. I've had
it working and so have many others :)

If you do the following from the command line
NET USE X: \\www.asaris-matrix.com\mvp-walsh\TestDocs
you will see that the NET USE statement will work with a Document Library
(just added to the European WSS FAQ mirror)
In this case it will ask for a User Name that you can't give it (as
anonymous doesn't have update rights) but at least it shows that the
statement works.
