Can I create a new site definition for "Create Portal" (ie: SPS)?

For WSS: Microsoft recommends to create a new site definition rather
than modifying files in 60\TEMPLATE\1033\STS (due to service pack
clobbering, etc). So, copy STS directory into STSCUSTOM, add entry to
XML\WEBTEMPCUSTOM.XML and create sites with your new template.

For SPS: If I want to modify the appearance of the portal (SPS), do I
jump into the SPS directory and start making file changes directly? It
seems that Microsoft should have a similar recommendation involving
copy SPS to SPSCUSTOM and establish SPSCUSTOM as a new (or only) portal
site definition.

As I get deeper into this question, I wonder how SharePoint knows that
"Create Portal" should use the "SPS" site definition, and thus, how do
I change that.

NOTE: I want to modify the spstd[1-8].aspx files, the navigation bar,
SPS\LISTS aspx files, ... I know about modifying PortalHeader.aspx, but
that isn't enough.

In your case it would seem that you should backup the SPS directory and make
the changes there. Be warned that a Service Pack may over write your
changes so when you are done, make a copy of your changes just in case.

I am not 100% certain of this but it looks like the file "WEBTEMPSPS.XML"
located in the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\XML
folder tells SPS what template to use when creating a new SPS site.

Thanks for the validation on how to modify SPS files.

Upon further digging (changing this and that), it appears that "SPS" is
how SharePoint refers to the site definition to create. Because the
name determines the directory, AFAIK you MUST modify the files in the
SPS directory.

Changing the ID of the SPS site definition didn't make a difference in
normal operation. If it did, then we would be able to refer to another
SPS directory such as "CUSTOMSPS".

Thanks for the reply,
