http://www.company.com. now we also want to set up a portal server in China
and the url is expected to be http://www.company.com/china. the SPS servers
for the two portal are phisically located in USA and China respectively. is
this possible? and how?

Are you looking to have the same portal or will they be completely separate?
If they are separate then I like the other guys idea of just making a page
that redirects the /china people to the other portal. Name it something
else though. What about using http://china.company.com that way you don't
even have to mess with the redirect. Then you can host that site in China
and no problem. That also keeps your China users from having to come to the
USA to get redirected.

first of all, thanks for your advice.
actually these two portals are physically separated and I don't want to use
redirecting because the url in the browser's address box will change after
redirecting. also, we are required to name the portal in microsoft's fashion
(www.microsoft.com/china).

www.server.com will always resolve to the same IP regardless of what /china
you have at the end. So your people when they put www.server.com in their
browser they are getting shipped to the same server regardless of anything
that comes after the /. I talked to another guy about this and we both
think the www.china.server.com is your best bet. I realize this may not
work for you but that is all I have. If you come up with some other
solution please share with us?
Sorry I am no help
