Old MOM is being replaced by new MOM (aka 2005).

We will be weaning off the old system over a period of months. Can you
install the new MOM databases side by side with the old MOM databases?

I have been told that the database installation portion does not allow
you to name the database so installation along side of old MOM will not
work.
Will we need to place these databases on a seperate SQL Server box?

The databases have the same name and the name can't be changed so if you use
separate DB's they must be on separarte SQL instances. You can also do a
rolling upgrade where you upgrade the DB then gradually upgrade your servers
and agents.
