I have inherited a Commerce Server / Content Manager site. Since the site
will be hosted on a new domain, I must rename the servers to comply with our
domain naming standards. The Web Server and SQL server are on two seperate
boxes. Is there a way to transition the site so it will function properly.
The site is a modified MSIB 2.0 site.

Thanks

We had to do the same thing with an MSIB 1.0 site we inherited. It was a
nightmare to change the server name. I couldn't even tell you the steps we
took, but it was by trial and error. Good luck. (it really should be
easier).

The name changes pertaining to SQL Server should be relatively easy to make
as these can be made through the Commerce Server Manager Console.

1. First change the connection string (available as part of the properties)
of the Commerce Server Manager to point to the renamed SQL Server.
2. Then for each object that you see under commerce server manager, examine
the properties for connection strings and chage the server names there :)

Once you've renamed the Web Server, look for the following tables in the
<site>_commerce db CatalogCache_VirtualDirectory, mktg_virtual_directory,
SourceDef, txVirtualDirectory, virtualDirectory....

Each of the above tables would have a reference to the web server name.

After having done this, restart the server and using the Commerce Server
Manager synchronize the IIS Metadata with the database.

Oh.. Best of Luck :)

Here's a set of instructions that may help. I haven't tried this - this
was provided to me from the field (thanks Tom!).

Renaming a machine

It is often necessary to rename a machine after it has been created based
on a ghost image, added to a domain, etc. After you rename a machine with
Commerce Server 2002, there are a few manual steps you need to complete to
make sure CS is working properly.

COM+ Packages

Open the Component Services MMC Snap-in.
Drill down to Component Services/Computers/My Computer/COM+ Applications.
Right click Commerce Server Event Logging and select the identity tab.
Update the account information with the new machine name.
Repeat Steps 1-4 for the Commerce Server Reporting Manager application.
Commerce Server Manager - Administration Database

Open the Commerce Server Manager MMC Snap-in.
Right click the Commerce Server Manager Node and select Properties.
Click Modify and update the connection string with the new machine name.
Windows Services

Open the Services MMC Snap-in.
Right Click the Commerce Server Direct Mailer service and select the Logon
tab.
Update the account information with the new machine name.
Repeat Steps 1-3 for Commerce Server List Manager and Commerce Server
Predictor.
Commerce Server Manager - Existing Sites

If you have any CS sites that were created prior to renaming the machine,
you will need to update the resource connection strings using the Commerce
Server Manager. These settings can be found under Commerce Server
Manager/Global Resources. Examples are Profiles, Data Warehouse, and
Direct Mail.

You will also want to update the site resource connection strings such as
Business Desk Permissions, Campaigns, Product Catalog, Transactions Config,
Transactions. You will also want to update the non-secure host names for
the sites which can be found under Commerce Server Manager/Commerce
Sites/Applications/Site Name/Applications.

If you have problems with profiles, check the connection strings in the
SourceDef table.
