How easy is installing LiveComm server? |
|
|
Hi,
I am okay with administrating windows server, active directory and Exchange
Server.
Now I am thinking to install Microsoft Live Communication Server and I need
to report my manager how much time do I need doing that.
Comparing to Exchange Server, How difficult is Installation and learning
Live Communication Server?
Thanks,
Alan |

Hi,
Well, I think it's quite simple but you know... My experience is quite
painful.
Generally, the deployment guide which included on the CD is enough (it's
less than 100 pages). It will tell you a lot on that, but shortly, there're
three basic steps:
_Prepare the Domain (includes three small steps)
_Install LCS
_Deploy Client (install client soft, config DNS, enable SIP account for
domain users)
Besides that, dont forget one big thing, LCS is not compatible with IPv6.
Then I can say, it won't take you more than an hour to deploy. But read the
Guide carefully.
Best luck,
Cang

LCS is easier to learn and deploy than Exchange. Exchange is a complex
animal that is nearing revision 6.5. LCS is fairly new and there were a lot
of features added between LCS 2003 and LCS 2005. The RTC group at Microsoft
has done a great job in bringing LCS 2005 to market. One thing that has
made life easier is their installation path. It will check the status of
the schema, groups, permissions, etc. and report those through the console.
Microsoft provides some great lab documents on configuring the servers.
Honestly, it depends upon the version. I have found that an LCS 2005
Standard Edition deployment internal with TCP only is easy and takes less
than an hour to setup and configure in a small and stable lab environment.
LCS 2005 Enterprise Edition is a little trickier as it requires SQL server,
certificates to be issued for server-server communication (MTLS), the pool
name to be entered in DNS (very important), etc.
Archiving adds another layer of complexity because it requires MSMQ to be
installed in addition to the archiving service to be installed.
Federation adds another layer of complexity...a pretty large layer.
Outside user scenarios adds another large layer of complexity.
Realistically it is possible to learn the basics of the product in a few
weeks. Take the time to read through the boards (Thomas Wenzl, the resident
LCS MVP mentions in his .sig). There are a lot of quirks to be discovered
and the boards have a lot of the "gotchas" posted. You can also go to
Google Groups
(http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.livecomm.general) and
review the issues that have came up.
Most of the problems that present themselves (I am a consultant) are related
to DNS or the SIP Domain name not being configured (from the LCS 2005 MMC
right-click on the forest name and select properties).

Takes longer to download than install 15mins, setup all users etc.
You can create a query in active dir users and comps and highlight all users
and setup there sip details in bulk like that in exchange.
The only time consuming bit is setting up msgr on lots of computers but even
then thats do-able via an interesting email.
Its alot faster that exchange IM, its a shame the client hasnt had a face
lift in a long while.

I believe it is easy if you're only using it internally but that's a big IF.
Trying to get it to work externally without outside clients I have found to
be a nightmare.
The internal only version I got running in a afternoon without problem.
