LCS 2005 SE Ability to choose existing SQL server instance i |

The installation program starts installing MDSE instead of letting me choose
the existing SQL server instance already running. I cannot find a way to
override this. Installing MSDE (basically a second SQL server instance) is
not acceptable, why would I want two SQL servers to adminster instead of one? |

LCS 2003 and LCS 2005 SE both use MSDE for storage.
LCS 2005 EE will support a SQL store.
Start at http://office.microsoft.com/livecomm, and all docs but the
reference guide should be available. I believe the overview will give the
product and technology differences you need.

*This is unsupported*
LCS 2003 and LCS 2005 SE will allow you to install LCS with a local named
instance (rtc) of SQL. Though, you might not want to run these applications
on your production SQL server. Unfortunately, there isn't a way documented
regarding connection to a remote SQL server with LCS 2003 or LCS 2005 SE.
As Tom has already mentioned, through LCS 2005 EE you can use SQL. You
create an enterprise pool on the SQL server and then you install and
activate the LCS 2005 EE server. This adds a layer of complexity as your
LCS 2005 EE users will need to connect to the pool name and not the server.
So, you also need to put in a DNS entry. Other than that, a single-server
LCS 2005 EE implementation is pretty straight forward and similar to that of
the LCS 2005 SE implementation. Adding a second LCS 2005 EE server to the
pool adds a bit more complexity.

Note that MSDE is free and SQL requires the standard licensing.
