Hi Folks - We have been running SBS 2000 for a couple of years. We have 10
Outlook 2002 clients that use local Exchange email. We upgraded 5 clients
from Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP Pro. Since the upgrade, clients are not
receiving email or have a huge delay in receiving local email. If they close
and open Outlook, email arrives. If the server is re-booted, they get their
email. Any ideas

Thanks,

Michael

As a test, while in Outlook, click on a folder other than Inbox, and then
back to Inbox. Does the mail magically appear?
If so, it's your Windows firewall, which is probably enabled. Disable it or
set up exceptions for the local LAN....Exchange tries to send UDP packets to
the client to show new items, etc., and the firewall is blocking this
traffic.

Hi Michael,

If those XP's are with SP2, just add outlook.exe to the exceptions in the
Windows Firewall of the clients.

The UDP ports are random, and TCP doesn't enter into it. If you don't
absolutely need the XP firewall enabled (I don't, except for laptop users),
you can just disable it.

I've never tried Marina's advice for XP SP2 & outlook.exe, but it's worth a
shot - she's a Reliable Source. :)

Yeah, I hear that a lot. You'll have to get in line.

But then again, I don't usually use the XP firewall on LAN clients... :)

Hi Lanwench,

As you always have good reasons for things the way you do, can you please
explain to me why you aren't using the xp firewall on the LAN-clients? Don't
you know that if that firewall would have existed in the time that Blaster
came out, the damage wouldn't have been as big as it got?

When Blaster came out, all my workstations & servers were already patched to
the gills, so even if the networks weren't protected by a good perimeter
firewall, and someone had plugged in a non-corporate laptop, etc., they'd
still have been OK. Lucky? Sure, in terms of timing, I reckon so. But I do
try keep on top of this stuff.
Several of my client sites aren't on SP2 yet due to compatibility issues -
they're in the queue to get tested & done.
....I have yet to figure out how to configure the Windows Firewall (or ICF)
to allow for all the remote access & management I need & still provide some
degree of protection.
I don't think leaving the firewall enabled is a bad thing; I just generally
don't do it, at least not yet.
