Hi.

I received a phone call this afternoon from a potential client. I haven't
even had the chance to see their setup yet, but I thought maybe some of you
folks might have run across this.

First, users report they are unable to turn on the Out of Office feature.

Secondly, they can forward messages within their network, but anything they
forward outside their domain never gets there. They can send find, but they
can't forward. Weird! No?

Any thoughts? Where should I look first? TIA

Can't enable it *at all* in Outlook - accessing the Exchange mailbox
directly? What happens when they try? Do they get an error message?

Manually, or via a rule? If the latter, that's normal. Autoforward to the
Internet (and autoreply) is disabled by default, for good reasons. If you
mean they can't manually forward, what happens when they try?

Without knowing more details of their setup, how they handle Internet mail,
etc., it's difficult to say. Can you get in there & check out their stuff?
Don't change anything til they sign a contract, mind you - but make notes.

I'm going in the morning, so if I can't figure it out, I'll post here again.
I kind of thought that would be the kind of answer I get, but figured it was
worth running up the flag pole. ttys.

Ok. I went to the client site this morning. When I got there, I was able
to successfully run Outlook, which was configured for the Administrator
account. I turned on Out-of-Office and sent an Email from one of my own
accounts to it. The message arrived successfully, but no Out-of-Office
reply was sent. The last time they had rebooted, IIS choked on the Exchange
sites, and the Public WWW site. I restarted W3C, and all the Exchange
services, receiving no error events. However, still no Out-of-Office.

Current mail travels in both directions to most sites, but there's a ton of
Retry entries in the domain queues. I force-connected a few, but after a
few minutes, the numbers hadn't changed, even with a Refresh. I can
establish a Telnet connection from outside their network. The version that
comes up is 5.0.2195.6713. Unfortunitely, I didn't have time to check
service pack levels, but that should help.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Derek
