Why does Veritas 9.1 install SQL desktop? |
|
|
I have an SBS 2000 installation with Exchange Server - no ISA server and no
SQL server. The server had Veritas 8.0 and I uninstalled this and installed
Veritas 9.1 with a licence for Windows Servers and Exchange Server 2000.
When the installation was finished, Veritas had installed the desktop SQL
service. Was this necessary? Can I remove it safely?
TIA |

Hi,
As you have seen, Veritas installed the SQL desktop service, so no, you
should not remove it.

I'm not familiar with Veritas, however during installation, Computer
Associates Arcserve backup software gives you the option of choosing Native
or SQL databases. If you choose SQL, there must be a SQL server running to
continue.

Hi Rodger,
If you don't have SQL server installed, than it will install the MSDE
Desktop.

You will break Veritas BEX if you uninstall MSDE. BEX sets up a database
instance with job history, media history, files backed up etc in this
database. It needs it to function.

Another point of interest, Veritas Backup Exec Ver.10 is coming out very
soon, if you buy Veritas Backup Exec. Ver.9.1 today, instead of buying the
retail version buy under the SKU that gives you free upgrade for 1 year, a
little more money but worth it if you care for next improved version.
