Changing the local domain when upgrading |
|
|
Hello all.
I'm currently running SBS2000 but am planning an upgrade to SBS2003 soon.
Since I expect to add one or two Mac OS-X clients sometime next year I was
thinking of changing the internal domain from "*.local" to *.lan" during the
upgrade, as I've heard this will simply the process of adding Mac clients.
Any advice or pitfalls to be aware of when making such a change? I'm
planning on a clean install (swing migration method possibly) and am hiring
someone else to do the work. But I thought I would post the question in
case there are some caveats to this the consultant may not be aware of.
Thanks for any input. I appreciate it.
Have a good New Year!

You don't actually need to change the domain from *.local - as long as
you know about it, a Mac can be reconfigured to work with a "real"
..local domain.

What Steve said...
Fixing the ".local" Problem in Mac OS X

More Mac stuff from Eriq Neale's site
http://simultaneouspancakes.com/Int/archive/macintosh/index.shtml
But if you're planning on a clean install fo SBS 2003, changing to .lan or
..loc or anything but .local may be a good idea.

Thanks for the reply.
I knew it be made to work with the *.local, but I thought it simplified
things to have something else (like *.lan). So I thought I would have it
changed while doing the upgrade, assuming it didn't create other
complications in the process. But if it's not much trouble to add a Mac
with *.local, maybe I'll just keep it as is.

Thanks Merv for the links. It doesn't sound like it's that big a deal
either way.

You could even use .ricekrispietreats if you wanted. Don't know if Mac users
like that, though. :)

Technically it's possible to do use Swing Migration and do a domain rename
during a specific point in the process. I wouldn't recommend doing it for
this sort of issue, but it's an option.

Thanks Jeff. That's good to know.
It doesn't sound like it's a big issue either way, but I thought it might be
good to do just to keep things simpler later on.
