installing Additional Domain Controller in SBS 2000 |
|
|
We have SBS 2000 installed & now we are installing a new hardware server. and
we want to move all the users into the new server.
I am thinking of installing 1 more SBS 2000 as an additional to the
installed DC and then make it GC.
can anyone help me in this scenario and send me the link for any
documentation on this
thanks and regards |

what is your goal? do you want to move SBS2000 entirely from your old server
to your new server?

Hi Shoeb,
There can only be 1 SBS in a network. You will have to use plain server
media for an additional DC.

If you want to get a clean installation of this new server, and yet make a
transparent swap of the new SBS in place of the old one, you may be
interested in visiting my website to investigate the process of doing a
Swing Migration. It's a way to accomplish what you describe, but with an
advantage you didn't identify. If you were to attempt to do what you
described, you would end up changing the name of the server, and actually
create a substantial amount of work just cleaning it up. Swing Migration
provides the means to keep the original server name when you introduce the
new server, and retain all the AD information, same accounts, same
Information Store, and do the process working offline without shutting down
the production server until you do the swap out. You wouldn't need to work
on the weekend to accomplish this, you could do it during the week, normal
business hours if you want.
You can purchase a Swing It!! Technician Kit is a project guide to the
process and includes tools to automate many aspects of the tasks.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about this here in the NG, or
directly offline if you prefer. My website provides a great deal of
information you can review to see what is involved without making a purchase
first.

Jeff Middleton's Swing Migration can make this relatively painless for
you. Look for his posts in th elast few days in this newsgroup.
http://www.sbsmigration.com/content.php?display=projects I use his
process and it makes my IT life easier. You can build the new server
offline. In an hour after everyone has gone for the day you can slip
the new server in and the end users never see the change.
