2003 as BDC... |

Can a Windows 2003 server be setup as the BDC with an NT4 server as the PDC?
This would be just a temporary setup until we can migrate our other servers
to 2003.

There is no such thing as a Win 2k3 BDC. They operate in multimaster mode.

No, there is no BDC PDC concept in win2k3. I guess you may want to make the
win2k3 as a backup server in NT domain and eventually upgrade to win2k3
domain. Technically speaking, we use the following process:
- Install BDC on the new box.
- Promote a Windows NT 4.0 BDC to the PDC, which demotes the PDC to
a BDC.
- Do a full backup of the former PDC and remove it from the network.
- Upgrade the new PDC to Windows Server 2003. If you want to expand
the boot partition, please refer to the following KB:
325857 How To Expand the Boot Partition During a Windows Server 2003 Upgrade

- Use the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory wizard to turn on the
Active Directory service. The Active Directory service imports the existing
user accounts, groups, and other settings from the PDC.
- Run your new Windows Server 2003 domain controller with Active
Directory for a test period.
- If desired you can do a clean installation of Windows Server 2003
on the former PDC, and bring it online as an Active Directory domain
controller.
- Transfer all Flexible Single-Master Operation (FSMO) roles to the
new Windows Server 2003 domain controller.
- Verify all directory information has replicated.
- Demote the first domain
As a kind reminder, if you want NT and win2k3 run in a period of time, you
may need to add NT4emulator key on PDC before you upgrade to win2k3.

So what happens if the server I setup win2k3 (PDC) on goes down?
How would the users get authenticated?

If you install the second win2k3 server and join it to the exising network,
it is a memeber server. You then can promote it to be an addition DC of the
current DC for backup purpost.
