Initial Replication of BIG DFS |

Hello,
the following situation:
we have a large software repository, that we need to replicate to some 20
locations. The repository is about 25GB (450Files in 360Folders) in the
moment.
We now search for a way to make an initial "replication" by sending DVDs to
the location and let the local administrators copy the files to the shares
and then set up the DFS with file replication because we don't want the
initial 25GB to be pushed over our WAN-lines.
What is the best way to do it?

You can't create the files then set up replication. If you try, FRS will
move all the files into a Pre-Existing directory before it begins
replication from the Master. You can:
- Either: Set up replication, then set the replication schedule in AD,
System, File Replication Service, then let it trickle down out of hours. But
be aware that a change of ACLs at the root of the folder will trigger a full
replication.
- Or: Place the files manually, then schedule a Robocopy at intervals to
copy changes
- Or: use a third party file replication service

There is a way to prestage content in FRS, but it can only be done on a
third member, not the initial two. The prestaging process involves enabling
replication between two initial members, waiting for data to be sync'd,
making a backup of the replicated files, restoring the files on the third
member, and enabling FRS (this is simplified--it's actually more
complicated). And yes, data is temporarily moved into the pre-existing
folder on the third member but is moved back to the replica tree when FRS
confirms the files are identical.

However, I think there is one step missing from this. This step would be
required if the replica set is less than 7 days old. Let me know if you'd
like additional details on this extra step.
