Hello,

We've got a mixed envorinment with Windows 2000 DC's en Windows 2003 DC's.
We DO NOT use DFS (only default). But on de 2003 DC's DFSSVC is taking the
full CPU usage.. Does anyone know why? Any Sollution?

Thx

DFS server service is used on DCs to provide DFS referrals for SYSVOL.
\\domainFQDN\SYSVOL is a domain based DFS root.
All W2K and WinXP clients must find servers that host SYSVOL.
The do so by first querying for \\domainFQDN\SYSVOL . The DC (DFSSVC
service) provides a list of DCs that host SYSVOL to the client.

In order to troubleshoot this, we need more info on the nature of the CPU
spiking.
stop and start the DFSSVC---does the CPU usage immediately spike up after
starting? how long does it take?
unplug the NIC cable from the DC (assuming the DC is only a DC and not a
file/print/app server)----does the CPU usage immediately drop?
Does the CPU usage immediately spike up after plugging the NIC cable back
in?

How many clients do these W2K3 DCs serve?

Hello Glen,

When the DFS service is stopped the CPU usage drops immediately. We have got
18 sites. Every site contains 1 DC which is also GC and hosts DNS and WINS.
Al DC's are running W2K.
Our main site contains 5 DC's 3 of them host w2k3 and about 100 user
homedirs an profiles. 1 of them is w2k DC and also hosts about 100 users
homedirs and profiles. The last DC on the main site is another w2k server.
We have about 1600 clients all w2k and some xp clients.
The problems of the DFS service are only on the w2k3 DC's.

Because al our lines are upgraded to 1GB, we are in the middle of migrating
our environmnet to a single site, with less DC's and we are taking the
fileserving part of the DC's

You did not mention how long it takes for the CPU utilization to rise after
restarting DFSSVC.

Are you running SP1 RC1 on the W2K3 boxes?

Hello Glen,

Sorry,
It takes about 2 minutes or longer to go to a 100% cpu usage after starting
the DFS service. The CPU usage goes up slowly. It seems that when the DFS
service is already started and people start logging in the cpu is goes up
faster to 100%.

Only the w2k3 machine have this problem.
