How to disable a referral? |
|
|
Hello NG,
i installed DFS on two Windows 2003 Servers. The replication works fine. My
problem is: How could i disable the referral to the one server?
The users should only see one server - but the replication must work.
I try to disable the referral with the DFS-MMC, but I can't see the
disable-button in the Action-menu.
Are there any ideas?
Thanks for help!

Are you trying to disable a referral for a root target or link target? This
only works for link targets.

Hello Jill,
I try this for a root target - I think I must use a root target because I
want to replicate two servers. I want to achieve that two servers replicate
data but users should only work with one of the servers. How could determine
wich server the clients access?
Thank you for help.

Instead of creating two root targets and replicating the root, you should
instead create two root targets (for redundancy of the namespace itself, not
the data it contains), and then create a link with two link targets and
replicate the link. You can then disable referrals to one of the link
targets so that clients are referred only to the desired server.
For more information about why replicating a root is not recommended, see
the DFS FAQ at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/dfsfaq.mspx.
The question you want is called:
Q. If I use multiple root targets in a domain-based DFS namespace, do I need
to enable replication on the root?
