DFS Root and Root target - same? |
|
|
I am relative new to DFS and FRS and I am wondering, is a Domain DFS Root
essentially the same as a Root Target?
The reason I am asking is, I have two servers - one running Server 2003
Enterprise edition and one runnint Standard edition. I know you can only
have multiple Roots on Enterprise edition but when I went to make a second
Root Target on the Standard edition it did not let me because I already had
one Root target there from a DFS Root on the Enterprise edition. So - is the
Standard edition treating the targets as roots and thus not allowing more
than one?
Thanks in advance.

Correct. A Standard Edition server can host one root. In essence, that
Standard Edition server is the root target for the root it hosts. Now, if
your Standard Edition server is hosting a domain DFS root, you can add
another root target to that root, and that root target will be another
server (your Enterprise server, for example). Does this make sense?

Yes that does make sense. Can it be a DFS host of a folder which actually
resides on the "main" server (the Enterprise edition) since it would be
replicating back and forth anyway?

I'm not sure I understand the question--can you clarify?

Jill,
Thanks for responding, but I answered my own question.
Thanks for your help and if you have a moment, could you help me with my
other post? ("Shot myself in the foot...)
Thanks in advance,
TK
