I have a parent domain that has lost communications to a child domain and it
is causing dns errors out the wazoo! Does anyone know how to delete the
child domain from the parent without having to re-create the entire domain? I
have tried to re-establish the connection but to no avail.

If the lost communication to the child domain is intentional and you don't
ever want the two to communicate again you can clean the old unwanted domain
out of AD by following this guide: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=230306
